Lost your car title in Oklahoma? Replace it or sell without it

A lost title in Oklahoma is replaced with one notarized form, 701-7, plus an $11.00 fee. The new title comes by mail. Before you file, check that a paper title ever existed, since Oklahoma now issues titles electronically. Then choose: replace it before you sell, or call us about the car as it is.

Short answer

Oklahoma replaces a lost title with notarized Form 701-7 and an $11.00 fee, and the new title comes by mail. First check that a paper title ever existed, since titles are now electronic. Then replace it before you sell, or call about the car as it is.

First, check that there is a paper title to lose

Since July 1, 2025, Oklahoma issues titles electronically by default, with paper only in a few listed cases. A paper title issued before then stays valid until the next title transaction, such as a sale, a transfer or a new loan. Then the record turns electronic. So if your car changed hands or was financed after mid-2025, there may be no paper title anywhere.

That matters, because Service Oklahoma keeps two forms apart. In its words, "The duplicate title form should only be used when an existing paper title has been lost." A car with an electronic title is sold on Form 718, the Electronic Title Bill of Sale, signed in front of a notary; the paperwork guide walks through it. If a buyer needs paper, for example because the car will be registered or sold out of state, that is Form 701-5, the Title Print Request. The agency puts a paper print at seven to 10 days.

Still paying off the car? Then the title is likely with your lender, not lost. Oklahoma is a title-holding state, so the lienholder keeps the title while the loan is open. Ask the lender before you file anything.

Getting a duplicate title in Oklahoma: Form 701-7

The form is 701-7, printed as the Application for Replacement Certificate of Title. Service Oklahoma's FAQ calls it a duplicate title; it is the same form. The record owner signs it, or the lienholder does, and the signature must be notarized. If someone signs for you under a power of attorney, attach the notarized original or a certified copy.

Have the VIN ready, along with the current registration decal number. Your Oklahoma registration must be current, unless the record owner now lives in another state and can show it with, for example, an out-of-state driver license, a utility bill or a rental agreement. If it has lapsed and you cannot show that, you pay the overdue registration fees and penalties and hand in an Oklahoma insurance verification form before the duplicate is issued. Our Tulsa renewal guide covers catching up.

The title fee is $11.00. Mailing the form may add a mail fee, and Service Oklahoma prints two amounts for it: $1.73 on the form, $1.66 on the FAQ. If you mail it, confirm the current amount first.

Read the sworn statement before you sign. You declare the old title misplaced or destroyed, and you accept that the new one "will render invalid all earlier title certificates to this vehicle." If the original turns up later, it no longer counts, so keep it out of any sale.

Where to file it from Tulsa, and how long it takes

You do not have to drive to Oklahoma City. Service Oklahoma takes the application at its N Classen office there or at any licensed operator, the offices Oklahoma used to call tag agents. On the state's locations page, pick a service to see which offices offer it, then choose one near home.

The form itself steers you to a counter: "it is often faster to apply for a title through a licensed operator." Mailing it straight to the state, it adds, will not get you an answer sooner. Either way, nobody hands you the title across the desk; it comes by mail.

Service Oklahoma publishes no processing time for a duplicate title. The seven-to-10-day figure above is for a paper print request, a different form, so do not plan around it. Set the sale date for after the new title is in your hand.

A duplicate title is not on Service Oklahoma's list of online services. That list does let you print a duplicate registration certificate, which helps if the registration went missing with the title.

A lien, a signed title you lost, or a title from another state

A loan on the lost title. Paid it off, but the lost title still shows the lender? The lien stays active on the state's record until the lender's signed release is filed, and our title problems page explains that step.

The title never came in the mail. With no lien, and more than 21 days but under 90 since the title was issued, contact Service Oklahoma. It mails you an affidavit to fill out and send back.

You bought the car and lost the signed title. That is Form 777, not 701-7. It fits only when the previous owner gave you a properly assigned Oklahoma title and you then lost it. Send proof of the sale with it, such as a notarized bill of sale or a canceled check. If you never got a signed title at all and cannot reach the seller, that is Form 753, the Affidavit of Vehicle Ownership, explained on our junk car page.

The title came from another state. Form 701-7 replaces an Oklahoma title. Service Oklahoma's list for titling a car here after a move starts with the out-of-state title, so ask the state that issued yours for a replacement first. The reverse case is covered: if you moved away and hold an Oklahoma title, Form 701-7 can mail the replacement to your new state.

Selling a car without a title in Tulsa

Any buyer who puts the car in their own name needs proof that it was yours to sell. From here you have two routes.

Sell it to us. We buy some cars ourselves, anywhere in Tulsa, and pay by check. A lost title, or lost keys, is not an automatic no. Call and tell us what you have: the plate, the VIN, and whether a loan is still open. We look at the car and tell you whether it is one we can buy. When it is not, we say so and point you to the partner.

Get the partner's offer. It starts with a free, no-obligation offer online. The partner arranges and covers the pickup, and at pickup, "Peddle issues payment immediately by check." Its page lists three documents to gather: the vehicle title, the registration, and a valid driver's license or ID. If the title is the missing piece, file the duplicate first, or ask the partner before pickup which ownership document it will take.

Lost title questions from Tulsa sellers

How do I get a replacement title in Oklahoma?

Fill out Form 701-7 and sign it in front of a notary. The record owner or the lienholder signs, or someone holding their power of attorney. Take it to a licensed operator with the $11.00 title fee, or mail it. The new title comes by mail either way.

Can I sell a car with no title in Oklahoma?

A buyer who retitles the car needs ownership papers, so replacing a lost title first keeps the sale simple. If your record is electronic, there is no title to replace: you sell on the notarized Form 718. For a car in Tulsa, call (539) 271-2021. We look at cars with no title and say whether we can buy them.

How long does a duplicate title take in Oklahoma?

Service Oklahoma gives no processing time for a duplicate. The form says a licensed operator is often faster than mailing it to the state, and the title always arrives by mail.

Can I apply for a duplicate title online?

It is not among Service Oklahoma's online services. A duplicate registration certificate can be printed online, but the title goes through a licensed operator, the N Classen office or the mail.

I found my old title after applying. Can I still use it?

No. By signing Form 701-7, you accepted that the replacement voids every earlier title for the vehicle. Sell with the new one.

The lost title was from Texas or another state. What now?

Ask the state that issued it for a replacement. Oklahoma's duplicate form covers Oklahoma titles, and titling the car here starts with the out-of-state title itself.

Two ways to sell it from here

Call the Tulsa line, (539) 271-2021, or send the car's details on the sell-it-to-us form and mention the missing title. A person here reads it, and when we buy a car, we pay by check. Rather have an instant number? The partner's offer is free and you can turn it down.
