Short answer

Check the VIN for open air bag recalls and have them done free. An ABS warning light is a repair you pay for; get a quote and compare it with an offer as it sits.

Dodge Charger problems: the years that stand out

Owners can report a safety problem to NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and each report is filed under the model year and the parts it names. Each is an owner's account, not a proven defect. Big sales years also pile up more reports. The Charger records below start at the 2012 model year and were read in September 2026.

  • 2012 and 2013: 648 complaints for 2012, the most of any year from 2012 on, and 360 for 2013. The electrical system is named on 359 and 167 of them. Many describe the alternator failing and the car stalling, sometimes with the steering going heavy too.
  • 2014: 343 complaints. Steering is named on 62, and many of those describe power steering that cuts out or stiffens on the road.
  • 2016: the body tops the list. Most reports filed under structure are about interior door panels that warp and pull away from the door.
  • 2017 and 2018: the electrical system leads, much of it the Uconnect touchscreen. Owners say the screen delaminates, bubbles, then acts as if it is being pressed: it "randomly initiates functions so it changes stations, adjusts heating/cooling," one 2018 owner wrote.
  • 2019 to 2021: air bags lead each year; on the 2020 they are named on 36 of 57 complaints. Most concern the side curtain air bag recall below, and many owners say the dealer didn't have the part yet.

Newer Chargers have far fewer reports so far.

Recalls to clear before a buyer runs the VIN

A recall is a safety defect the maker has acknowledged, with a set repair at its dealers. Some campaigns cover only part of a year's production.

  • 2012 to 2015, passenger front air bag: up to three inflator campaigns, depending on the year, and each notice says the same thing: "Owners are advised not to drive their vehicle until the recall repair is complete." Two of them cover only cars sold or ever registered in listed states, and Texas is on both lists.
  • 2012 to 2014, alternator: three campaigns on certain 3.6-liter and 5.7-liter cars, because the alternator can fail suddenly and the car can stall without warning.
  • 2012 to 2014, eight-speed automatic: a software update so the car warns you when you open the door without being in Park.
  • All-wheel drive: on the 2013, a transmission output shaft that can fracture; on the 2014 to 2017, front driveshaft bolts that can loosen.
  • 2018 to 2021, side curtain air bags: "The right and left side curtain air bag inflators may rupture due to a manufacturing defect." Dealers replace both, and owner letters began going out in February 2025.
  • Later years: a windshield that may not be fully bonded on the 2020 and 2021, a shifter that can slip out of Drive on the 2022, and a parking brake adjustment on the 2023.

A former police Pursuit car has recalls of its own. NHTSA's recall lookup, searched by VIN, shows what is still open on yours.

The no-charge repair is required by 49 U.S.C. 30120. That duty doesn't apply to a vehicle its first buyer bought more than 15 calendar years before the recall notice was given, and every campaign above falls well short of that.

Repairs no recall pays for

Some of the Charger's most reported faults have no recall, so the bill is yours:

  • ABS module, 2012 to 2014. Owners describe the ABS, brake and traction lights on at once and a shop calling for a new module, and some say that part was discontinued or on back order. The only ABS recalls cover 2011 and 2012 cars and move a fuse; they don't replace the module.
  • An alternator the recall skips. One 2014 owner reports three alternators and batteries in a year on a car whose VIN wasn't on the recall list.
  • Door panels and the touchscreen, 2016 to 2018. No recall covers either, and a buyer notices both right away.

Ask the shop to put the fault and the price on paper, and for the ABS module, whether the part can be found at all. Then compare two numbers: the repair price, and how much more a fixed Charger would sell for than one with the fault. If the first is bigger, the repair loses you money. The repair-or-sell guide helps with both. Warning lights are covered in small problems, and a ticking engine or rough shifting in engine problems and bad transmission.

What a Charger buyer will look at

This page won't guess at a figure for your Charger. A buyer's offer turns on these details:

  • Trim, engine and drive. Say whether it's a V6 or V8, rear- or all-wheel drive, and which trim. Buyers value them differently.
  • Open recalls. If the 2012 to 2015 front air bag recall is still open, the do-not-drive advice means the car may have to leave on a truck. Save the paperwork from any recall visit.
  • Mileage you can prove. Owner reports on a 2017 and a 2022 Charger describe a private purchase where the mileage later didn't add up. Give the exact reading and keep records that back it.
  • Lights and the cabin. An ABS or air bag light, a delaminated screen or loose door panels all show at inspection.
  • The title. Say up front if it carries a salvage brand or a lender's lien, since either one changes the paperwork and who can buy; see salvage title and car with a loan.

Selling the Charger in Tulsa: to us or through the partner

Call (539) 271-2021 or use the form with the year, trim, mileage, any warning lights and which recalls are done. We cover all of Tulsa, and when a Charger is one we buy ourselves, we pay by check. A Charger with no title or no key is still worth a call: we look at those, though we don't buy every one, and if yours isn't a fit we say so.

The other route is our partner, Peddle. Its page describes a free, no-obligation offer you request online, and says Peddle arranges the pickup and covers its cost. When the car is collected, "Peddle issues payment immediately by check." Its page lists three documents to gather: the title, the registration, and a valid driver's license or ID. Selling through Peddle earns this site a referral fee. The cash for cars page compares the two routes.

Every Charger on this page is a 2011 or newer vehicle, so Oklahoma wants an odometer disclosure when it changes hands. The title assignment usually includes it; when it doesn't, Service Oklahoma requires Form 729. A notary has to witness the title signature too, and the paperwork guide walks through it. Sell My Car Tulsa works on its own, with no connection to Dodge, Stellantis or any Dodge dealer.

Charger questions from Tulsa owners

Which Dodge Charger years have the most problems?

In the federal complaint file from 2012 on, the 2012 draws the most reports by a wide margin, much of it electrical, with alternator failures a common thread. The 2016 to 2018 cars draw door panel and touchscreen complaints, and air bags lead on 2019 to 2021. A count reflects how many cars were sold as well as how they held up.

Can I sell my Dodge Charger if the ABS light is on?

Yes. Tell the buyer which lights are on and what a shop found. On a 2012 to 2014 car, ask whether a replacement ABS module is even available before paying for one, and if the repair doesn't make sense, sell the car as it is.

Should I get the air bag recall done before selling?

If it's open on your car, yes. A Dodge dealer does it at no charge, and on 2012 to 2015 cars the notice says not to drive until it's done. If the part hasn't come in, tell the buyer; a car that shouldn't be driven can still be sold where it's parked.

What if my Charger has no title or the key is lost?

Call anyway. We look at Chargers with no title or no key, and you'll hear on that call whether yours is one we buy. A lost Oklahoma title can be replaced with a duplicate; lost title explains how.

Does Oklahoma need a separate odometer form when I sell?

Only when the title doesn't carry the odometer statement already. Every Charger from 2012 on needs a disclosure at sale, and Form 729 is Service Oklahoma's form for the cases where the title leaves it out.

Next step for your Charger

Keep the VIN, the odometer reading and any recall repair orders handy, then call (539) 271-2021 or fill in the sell-it-to-us form. When your Charger is one we buy, we make the offer ourselves and pay by check. When it isn't, the partner's offer is the other door, and asking for it commits you to nothing.
