Short answer
Know your year's pattern: oil burning on the older Equinox, a hard brake pedal on 2018 to 2020, stalling on newer ones. Clear any open recall; the rest is a repair-or-sell call.

Chevy Equinox problems come in runs of years
Owners file complaints with NHTSA, the federal vehicle safety agency, naming the parts involved. A complaint is one owner's account, not a proven defect, and a year that sold more cars collects more of them. The file, pulled in September 2026, shows four runs.
- 2012 to 2017: burning oil. The engine is the most-named part every year except 2015, when wipers edge past it: 355 of 685 complaints for 2012, 412 of 751 for 2013 and 178 of 273 for 2017. The reports keep coming back to oil. Owners add it between changes, see no leak, and get no warning before it runs low; some say the engine then stalled, lost power or started knocking. The 2010 and 2011 files look the same: the engine is on 271 of 784 and 386 of 782 complaints.
- 2012 to 2016: wipers. Wipers are named on 114 to 250 complaints a year, peaking in 2015, often one or both quitting in the rain.
- 2018 to 2020: a hard brake pedal. Service brakes lead the 2018 file (132 of 408) and the 2020 file (109 of 308) and come second for 2019 (80 of 301). The usual report is a pedal that suddenly goes stiff and won't slow the car normally, sometimes with a "Service Brake Assist" message. Several owners name the vacuum pump.
- 2022 to 2024: stalling. Fuel and propulsion lead each year: 74 of 170 complaints for 2022, 44 of 95 for 2023 and 23 of 79 for 2024. Owners describe an engine that dies in traffic and won't restart, often blaming the fuel pump or its control module.
The 2025 file has 227 complaints so far, led by the electrical system on 75, many about a dark screen or a phone that won't connect.

Equinox recalls worth closing before you sell
Recalls are a separate list: defects GM agreed to repair, and every notice below says dealers do the work free of charge. Not every car in a model year is included, so run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. The ones a buyer will raise:
- 2013, and 2014 to 2015: corroded ball joints in the wiper module can stop the wipers; dealers repair or replace the module. No wiper recall is listed for 2012 or 2016.
- 2015: front seat side air bags whose inflator may rupture; dealers replace the modules.
- 2018 to 2020: missing bolts on a transmission accumulator endcap that can leak fluid. The 2018 adds a right front driveshaft that may fracture and a high-pressure fuel pump that may come loose.
- 2019 and 2020 all-wheel drive: a fuel tank seam that may leak; dealers replace the tank.
- 2021 and 2022: the stalling recall. Its summary: "The fuel pump module may not consistently provide sufficient fuel to the engine, resulting in an engine stall." Dealers replace the module. Some also have a Hankook tire recall.
- 2023 and 2024: a passenger air bag sensor on 2023s with ventilated seats, and door strikers on 2024s that may crack and let a door open. Neither year has a fuel pump recall.
Other recalls cover seats, seat belt bolts and child-seat anchors. Free has a limit, though. Under 49 U.S.C. 30120, "The requirement that a remedy be provided without charge does not apply" if the first buyer bought the car more than 15 calendar years before the recall notice (five years for tires). The clock runs from that first sale to the notice date, not to today, and a used sale doesn't restart it. Every recall above came within about eight years of its model year, far inside that window.

An Equinox that burns oil or brakes hard: what to spend first
No recall NHTSA lists for the 2010 to 2017 Equinox covers oil use, and none for 2018 to 2020 covers a stiff brake pedal, so a recall won't pay for those repairs.
For oil use, have a shop measure how much the engine burns over a set distance, and get the diagnosis and the quote in writing. Some owners say the oil use returned after a repair, so ask what the shop's work covers if it does. Set the quote beside an offer for the car as it sits. When the repair would eat most of what a healthy Equinox brings, selling it as it is often makes more sense. The engine problems guide covers the symptoms, and repair or sell runs the numbers.
A pedal that goes hard, or a 2023 or 2024 that stalls, is a reason to park the car until a shop has seen it. It doesn't have to be driven to be sold: we cover all of Tulsa, and the partner arranges the pickup.
What a buyer weighs on a used Equinox
Without its details, nobody can price your Equinox fairly, so this page doesn't try. What moves an offer:
- Its year's run. Expect oil questions on a 2013, brake questions on a 2019 and the fuel pump recall on a 2022.
- How much oil it takes. If you add a quart between changes, say how often.
- Records. Oil change receipts, and dealer repair orders for closed recalls.
- Mileage, and whether it starts and drives.
- The title. Clean and in your name is simple; a brand or a loan changes who can buy it. See salvage title and car with a loan.
- Body and glass. Hail dents, a cracked windshield, warning lights; see hail and flood.
Selling the Equinox in Tulsa: our offer or the partner's
Call (539) 271-2021 or send the details through our form: the year, the mileage, how often it needs oil and what the title says. Some Equinoxes we buy ourselves, from anywhere in Tulsa, paying by check. An Equinox with no title or no keys still gets a look, though not every one is bought, and if yours isn't for us, we say so.
The other route is our partner Peddle's instant offer. Its page describes a free, no-obligation cash offer online, says Peddle "arranges and covers the cost of vehicle pickup", and says payment is issued by check at pickup. Its list of papers includes the title, the registration and your driver's license or ID. If your Equinox sells that way, the partner pays this site a referral fee. Cash for cars compares the two routes.
Service Oklahoma asks for a properly assigned and notarized title, or Form 718 when the title is electronic, and for a motor vehicle from 2011 or newer, "a completed odometer disclosure statement is required." That statement is usually part of the title's assignment; when it isn't, Form 729 is the separate form. The paperwork guide has the rest. Sell My Car Tulsa has no connection to Chevrolet, General Motors or any Chevy dealer.

Before you sell the Equinox: common questions
How do I sell my Chevy Equinox if it burns oil?
Sell it as it is and say so up front. Tell us, or the partner's online form, how often you top it off and whether the engine has ever stalled or lost power. An Equinox that uses oil can still be sold; the answer shapes the offer. Call (539) 271-2021 or use the form.
Which years have the Equinox oil consumption problem?
In NHTSA's complaint file it runs through the 2010 to 2017 cars, where the engine is the most-named part in nearly every year and the engine reports keep coming back to oil. Reports about oil drop off sharply after 2017. Not every car from those years burns oil, so check the dipstick between changes on yours.
Is the hard brake pedal on a 2018 to 2020 Equinox a recall?
Not under any Equinox recall NHTSA lists. The brake recalls for those years deal with the rear calipers: a brake bleed on 2018 and 2019 cars and new rear calipers on some 2020s. A pedal that turns hard needs a shop's diagnosis, and a car you can't trust to stop doesn't have to be driven to a buyer.
My 2022 Equinox stalls. Is there a recall for it?
There is one for some cars. Recall 23V013000 covers certain 2021 and 2022 Equinox models whose fuel pump module can starve the engine and stall it, and dealers replace the module. Run the VIN to see whether yours is included. NHTSA lists no such recall for the 2023 or 2024 Equinox.
Should I tell a buyer how much oil it uses?
Yes. Both routes look the car over at pickup, and a low dipstick will show up then anyway. Say it before the offer, and if you sell privately, write any known fault on the bill of sale.
