Sell your Hyundai Sonata in Tulsa

There are two ways to sell your Sonata here: call (539) 271-2021 or send the form to find out whether it's a car we buy ourselves, or request our partner's free online offer. Look up your model year below first, because the engine tops the Sonata's federal complaint file every year from 2012 through 2019, and the Hyundai engine recall covers some of those cars but not others.

Short answer

Check whether your year is in the Hyundai engine recall before paying for engine work; it covers some Sonatas and not others. The fuel tank recall matters on 2020 to 2023 cars.

The Sonata years owners complained about most

NHTSA, the federal vehicle safety agency, files owner complaints by model year and by the part involved. We read the Sonata's file in September 2026; the counts include the Hybrid and Plug-In. Each complaint is one owner's account, not a confirmed defect, and a year that sold well collects more.

  • 2011: 3,472 complaints, more than any other Sonata year from 2011 to 2025. Steering is named on 1,189, often a car that pulls to one side or a worn steering coupler, and the engine on 1,007.
  • 2012 to 2014: 1,710, 2,017 and 774 complaints, with the engine first each year: 634, 775 and 313.
  • 2015 and 2016: 1,197 and 881 complaints, with the engine named on more than half: 641 and 538.
  • 2017: 876 complaints, 446 about the engine. Steering follows with 182, many saying the power steering quit and the wheel turned heavy or locked.
  • 2018 and 2019: 382 and 170 complaints. The engine still leads, on 216 and 89, and many reports describe burning oil.
  • 2020: 194 complaints, with the electrical and fuel systems tied at 46. Many fuel reports describe a swollen tank, the subject of a recall below; several owners say the A/C blower died after a fuse or its wiring melted.

The 2011 to 2017 engine reports read alike: a knock from under the hood, a flashing check-engine light or a knock sensor message, limp mode, and at worst an engine that loses power or seizes on the highway. If that's your car, check the engine recall list next.

Hyundai Sonata engine recall: which years it covers

These recalls cover build-date ranges, not whole years, so enter your VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup.

  • 2011 and 2012, recall 15V-568: cars built at Hyundai's Alabama plant with the 2.0 or 2.4-liter direct-injection engine. Metal debris left in the crankshaft can restrict oil to the rod bearings, and the notice names the warning sign: "A worn connecting rod bearing will produce a metallic, cyclic knocking noise from the engine and possible engine failure." Dealers inspect the engine and replace it if needed.
  • 2013 and 2014, recall 17V-226: machining errors can wear the engine bearings early. Dealers inspect and replace the short block where needed.
  • Sonata Hybrid, 2011 to 2013, 2016 and 2017 (recalls 20V-746 and 21V-727): connecting rod bearings that can wear early. Dealers inspect, replace the engine if the bearings are damaged, and install knock-detection software.
  • 2015 to 2019 gas Sonatas: no engine recall appears in NHTSA's lists for these years; the fix-or-sell section covers them.

The fuel tank recall and the rest of the list

  • 2020 to 2023, recall 25V-796: "A damaged check valve can allow air to enter the fuel tank, causing it to expand and contact hot exhaust components, melting the tank." Dealers replace the valve, replace the tank if it's damaged, and update the engine software. Owner letters began going out on March 13, 2026, so it may still be open on yours.
  • 2021 and 2022: a transmission oil pump fault that can cut all drive power (22V-746), and a fuel leak on the 2.5-liter turbo (21V-524).
  • 2023, recall 23V-526: an Idle Stop and Go oil pump controller that can overheat. The notice says to park outside, away from buildings, until it's repaired.
  • 2011 to 2015 Sonata Hybrid, recall 23V-651: an anti-lock brake module that can leak and short, with a fire risk parked or moving. Same advice: park outside until it's fixed.
  • Older cars: on 2011 cars built through October 2010, a power steering circuit board can fail and take the steering assist with it (16V-190). The 2013 and 2014 cars add a fuel hose that engine heat can crack (22V-312).

Under 49 U.S.C. 30120 the maker must remedy a recall defect at no charge, unless the car's first buyer bought it more than 15 calendar years before the recall notice. Every notice above came well inside that limit, the 2011 cars included.

A 2015 to 2019 engine with no recall behind it

On a 2015 to 2019 gas Sonata that knocks, burns oil or has quit, no recall covers the engine. Get the diagnosis and a repair quote in writing, and ask a Hyundai dealer to run the VIN for any warranty coverage that still applies.

Then compare it with what the car would bring running. If a replacement engine costs nearly that much, selling the car as it is often makes more sense. The engine problems guide covers selling with a knock or a seized engine, and the repair-or-sell worksheet does the arithmetic. A dead A/C blower is a smaller call; see small problems.

A 2011 to 2014 goes the other way around: book the recall inspection first, since a covered car that fails it gets a new engine or short block at no charge. On a 2021 or 2022 that loses drive, check the transmission recall before the transmission guide.

The details that raise or lower a Sonata offer

There's no dollar figure here; nobody can fairly price a car unseen. An offer weighs these:

  • Engine history. A recall repair order, or oil-change receipts on a 2015 to 2019 car, answers a Sonata buyer's likely first question.
  • Noises and oil use. A knock, or a car that needs oil between changes, counts against it. Say so up front.
  • Open recalls. The 2020 to 2023 fuel tank recall shows up for anyone who enters the VIN.
  • Miles and condition. The exact odometer reading, hail dents, warning lights, whether it starts, and on some 2019 cars, paint peeling off the panels.
  • The title. A salvage brand, a loan or a missing title changes who can buy. See salvage title and car with a loan.

The two ways a Tulsa Sonata gets sold

Call (539) 271-2021 or fill in the sell-it-to-us form with the year, miles, engine symptoms and title status. We buy some cars ourselves, anywhere in Tulsa, and pay for them by check. We also look at Sonatas with no title or no keys, though not every one is a car we buy.

The other route is our partner Peddle's online offer, which its page calls free and no-obligation. Peddle arranges the pickup and covers its cost, and at the handover, "Peddle issues payment immediately by check." Have the title, the registration and your driver's license or ID ready. This site earns a referral fee whenever a sale closes through that route. Cash for cars lays the two side by side.

One Oklahoma rule reaches every Sonata on this page. Service Oklahoma says: "When transferring ownership of a motor vehicle from 2011 or newer, a completed odometer disclosure statement is required." The title usually has a space for it; when it doesn't, you also complete Form 729. The paperwork guide covers the notarized title and the rest. We have no connection to Hyundai or to any Hyundai dealer.

Sonata recall and selling questions

Is my Sonata part of the engine recall?

It might be if it's a 2011 to 2014 gas car or a 2011 to 2013, 2016 or 2017 Hybrid. Recall 15V-568 takes in Alabama-built 2011 and 2012 cars with the 2.0 or 2.4-liter engine, and 17V-226 takes in 2013 and 2014 cars, each by build date, so your VIN settles it. The 2015 to 2019 gas Sonata has no engine recall in NHTSA's lists.

Which years have the worst Sonata engine problems?

In the complaint file, 2011 through 2017. The 2011 has 1,007 engine complaints and the 2013 has 775, and in 2015 and 2016 the engine appears on more than half of all complaints. For 2018 and 2019, burning oil is the recurring report.

The dealer already replaced my engine under the recall. Is anything left to check?

On a 2011 to 2014 car, yes: recall 18V-934 has dealers inspect the high-pressure fuel pipe, which may have been damaged or tightened wrong during the swap, and replace it if needed. Keep both repair orders with the title, since a buyer who learns the engine was replaced will want to see them.

How do I sell my Hyundai Sonata if the engine has already failed?

You don't have to fix it. On a 2011 to 2014 car or one of the recalled Hybrids, have the dealer check the recall before anything else. Otherwise call (539) 271-2021 or use the form to see whether it's one we buy, or request the partner's offer, which comes with a pickup the partner arranges and pays for.

Can I sell a 2020 to 2023 Sonata before the fuel tank recall is done?

You can ask for offers at any point. Tell the buyer the recall is still open, because running the VIN will show it anyway. If you can get a dealer appointment before the sale, a closed recall is one less question on the day.
