Short answer

A 2021 to 2024 Sierra with the 6.2L V8 may be in the engine recall; run the VIN. Lifter failures outside the recall are yours to pay for, so compare that bill with an offer.

GMC Sierra 1500 problems: find your model year

Anyone can read the problem reports Sierra drivers file with NHTSA, the U.S. vehicle safety regulator. We tallied its GMC Sierra 1500 reports for the 2012 to 2025 trucks in September 2026. Each complaint is an owner's own report and proves no defect by itself; what matters is where the reports pile up.

  • 2012 and 2013. Mostly age: frames rusted through, one beside the gas tank, and dashboards cracking, some around the passenger air bag. No recall covers the frame or the dash. The air bag inflator recall below does apply.
  • 2014 and 2015. Headlights lead 2014, in 212 of 859 complaints, and stay high in 2015 at 130; owners call the beams too dim for night driving, even with new bulbs. Steering follows at 162, the assist cutting out in slow turns. In 2015 the brakes lead, in 243 of 816: a pedal that goes hard and weak stopping at low speed.
  • 2016 to 2018. NHTSA's 2016 file is small, 48 complaints, though that year shares the brake and air bag recalls below. In 2017 and 2018 the power train leads, in 144 of 429 and 130 of 304: a shudder under light throttle, which one owner likens to rumble strips, and hard shifts, several blamed on the eight-speed automatic.
  • 2019 to 2025. The engine leads every year, named in 305 of 645 complaints for 2019 and 302 of 570 for 2021. The excerpts keep returning to the 6.2L V8: power lost at highway speed, knocking, seized engines and replacements, a few of them after the recall work below. The 2022 trucks add a grille problem.

Open recalls on the Sierra 1500, and what the dealer does

A recall is different: GM has reported a defect and named the repair for the trucks it lists. The ones that matter most:

Your Sierra 1500CampaignWhat the dealer does
2021 to 2024, 6.2L gas V825V274000Inspects the engine and repairs or replaces it as needed. Trucks that pass get thicker oil, a new oil filter and a new oil fill cap.
2020 to 2022, diesel24V797000; 26V083000New transmission software for a control valve that can lock the rear wheels, plus special coverage for transmissions it flags. The follow-up inspects trucks whose first repair may not have been done right.
2019 and 202020V650000Replaces a driveshaft whose joint may not have been properly welded.
2015, 2016 and 201821V504000 (2015, 2016); 24V756000, 25V432000, 26V166000, 26V325000 (2018)Replaces the roof-rail air bag modules; an inflator end cap may detach or the inflator may rupture.
2014 to 201819V645000; 20V603000 (2018, 5.3L and 6.2L V8)Reprograms the brake control module for brake assist that weakens as the vacuum pump's output falls.
2014 and 201517V414000 (2014); 18V586000 (2015)Steering software for a brief loss of power assist.
2012 and 201321V054000 (Oklahoma); 21V051000 or 21V053000 (ever registered in Texas)Replaces the front passenger air bag inflator.
2022 with chrome grille deflectors25V060000Reinforces or repairs the deflector's attachment points.

Own a 2018? Check again even if you have before: GM has filed four campaigns for the same roof-rail air bag fault, and letters for the newest, 26V325000, went out June 24, 2026.

The grille campaign names only the GMC. Its summary reads: “The attachments that hold the front grille deflectors in place may fracture, resulting in grille detachment.” Several 2022 owners have since told NHTSA that a deflector still came off on the highway after the repair.

The failures no recall pays for

A recall repair costs you nothing, with one limit, set in 49 U.S.C. 30120: “The requirement that a remedy be provided without charge does not apply” once more than 15 calendar years separate the first buyer's purchase from GM's recall notice. That clock stops when the notice goes out, not today, so the 2021 air bag campaigns caught 2012 and 2013 trucks with years to spare. Look the VIN up on NHTSA's recall page before you name a price.

The costly failures in the file mostly sit outside the campaigns:

  • A 6.2L V8 in a 2019 or 2020 truck. Owners of these years report engine failures too, but NHTSA lists 25V274000 for 2021 to 2024 only.
  • Lifters and camshaft. Owners of 2017 to 2024 trucks describe lifter and cam failures, with loud clanking and a sudden loss of power. No recall names those parts.
  • The eight-speed automatic in a gas truck. The shudder and hard shifts carry no recall; the only transmission campaigns are for diesels.

If one of these has hit your truck, weigh a written estimate against what it brings as it sits; a dead engine does not rule out a sale. See engine problems, bad transmission and repair or sell.

What a buyer will ask about your Sierra

  • Which engine. It decides the big campaigns: 25V274000 is for the 6.2L gas V8 only, and the transmission campaigns are for the diesel only.
  • Proof of recall work. The dealer's repair order from any 25V274000 inspection.
  • What it does wrong. Say so at the start, so the offer is for the truck you have.
  • Miles, trim, title and body. A worn work truck and a low-mileage Denali crew cab price differently, and a loan, a salvage brand or hail dents each move the offer; see selling with a loan, salvage title and hail and flood damage.

No official source prices a used Sierra, and this page won't guess. An offer on your own truck is the number that counts.

Who buys your Sierra: us, or our partner

Selling to us. Phone (539) 271-2021 or use our form, and give the year, engine, mileage, faults and any open recall. Some trucks we buy ourselves, in any part of Tulsa, and those we pay for by check. We look at trucks without a title or keys too, and tell you plainly whether yours is one we can buy or one for the partner.

Selling through the partner. The partner is Peddle. Its online offer is free and carries no obligation, and Peddle sets up the pickup and pays for it. The money comes at pickup; as its page puts it, “Peddle issues payment immediately by check.” For paperwork, Peddle lists a valid ID or driver's license, the registration and the title. We receive a referral fee from Peddle when a sale completes that way.

The Oklahoma paperwork. Either way, a transfer generally calls for “a properly assigned and notarized Oklahoma certificate of title,” according to Service Oklahoma, so the signature you put on it needs a notary. Every other step is in our paperwork guide, and cash for cars lays our offer next to the partner's. GMC, General Motors and their dealers have nothing to do with this site.

Sierra 1500 sellers ask

Is my Sierra part of the GMC 6.2 engine recall?

Only a 2021 to 2024 Sierra 1500 with the 6.2L gas V8 can be, and campaign 25V274000 covers certain trucks in that group, not all of them. NHTSA's VIN search shows whether yours is on it and whether the work has been done. NHTSA's list does not put 2019 or 2020 trucks in this campaign.

The dealer already did the 6.2 recall inspection. What do I tell a buyer?

Tell them what the repair order says: whether the engine passed and got the oil, filter and cap change, or was repaired or replaced. Hand over a copy. A few owners have reported failures after the recall work, so expect to be asked how it has run since.

Can I sell my GMC Sierra if the engine or lifters have failed?

Yes, running or not. Tell us what the shop found when you call. If the truck isn't one we buy, we'll say so, and you can try the partner's free offer. Check the VIN first, since a 2021 to 2024 6.2L may still have 25V274000 open.

Where can I sell my truck around Tulsa when it won't move?

Right where it sits. Give us the address when you call; our area is the whole of Tulsa. On the partner route, Peddle arranges free towing from wherever suits you.

My 2012 or 2013 Sierra was registered in Texas once. Which air bag recall applies?

Possibly a different one. GM split the passenger inflator recall by state: Oklahoma trucks are in Zone B under 21V054000, and trucks ever registered in Texas appear in Zone A, under 21V051000 for 2012 or 21V053000 for 2013. The VIN lookup shows which campaign is on yours. The dealer replaces the inflator in every zone.
