Short answer

Look up the VIN for the battery tray and RAV4 Prime converter recalls. A leaking coolant bypass valve has no recall, so compare the repair with an offer as it sits.

Toyota RAV4 problems: what the owner reports say

Every complaint a RAV4 owner files with NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is public, tagged with the model year and the part it names. These are owners' reports, not proven defects, and years with more RAV4s on the road draw more. Read in September 2026, the 2012 to 2025 files flag these years:

  • 2012: 266 complaints. Wipers and visibility lead with 54, mostly the wipers, matching the wiper recall below. Speed control has 50, most describing the SUV speeding up while the driver was braking.
  • 2013 and 2014: Owners of Blizzard Pearl white RAV4s describe paint peeling off the roof, hood and doors. NHTSA lists no paint recall for those years.
  • 2017: The 12-volt battery comes up over and over: smoke or flames under the hood, and owners waiting on parts for the battery recall below.
  • 2019: 900 complaints, the high point of the 2012 to 2025 run. The fuel system is named on 266, mostly a tank that stops taking fuel early. Owners, many with hybrids, say it takes about 9 or 10 gallons when the gauge reads empty. The engine is named on 205, and more than half of those point to the engine coolant bypass valve.
  • 2020: 647 complaints. The engine leads with 182, most of them the same coolant bypass valve. A separate run of reports describes a 12-volt battery that goes flat after the RAV4 sits for a few days.
  • 2021: 507 complaints, with air bags on top at 147. Most of them trace to the passenger seat sensor recall below, often with the part not yet in. Sunroof glass shattering at highway speed recurs too.

Open RAV4 recalls to check against your VIN

Each campaign below covers certain RAV4s in the years named, not all of them, so enter your VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup.

  • 2012: wipers that can quit when the linkage corrodes and separates, and rear belts the seat cushion frame could cut in a frontal crash.
  • 2013 to 2018: the battery hold-down. The notice says "Certain replacement 12-volt batteries may not fit properly in the battery tray," and a battery that moves can short against its bracket, raising the risk of fire. Dealers replace the clamp, tray and terminal cover. If your battery was ever changed, check this one first.
  • 2019 and 2020: four campaigns. Porous castings in the 2.5-liter engine can leak coolant, and the dealer puts in a new engine, block and all, where needed. The front lower suspension arms may crack. Water can get into the power steering gear box. And the fuel pump may give out, stalling the engine.
  • 2020 to 2022: the passenger seat's occupant sensor. On 2020 and 2021 models it can short and keep the passenger air bag from deploying; the notice set owner letters in phases through January 2026. A 2022 campaign fixes seat parts that can make it misread the occupant.
  • 2021 and 2022 RAV4 Prime: a DC-DC converter that can short and overheat. Until it's replaced, "Owners are advised not to charge their vehicles when the ambient air temperature is below or expected to drop below 41 degrees Fahrenheit."
  • 2024: loose front brake caliper and hub bearing bolts, which can damage a brake hose or let a wheel come off.
  • 2023 to 2025: dash software that may not show speed or warning lights at startup, and a rear camera that can freeze on RAV4s with the Panoramic View Monitor. The 2025 adds a check of front seat bracket welds.

Under 49 U.S.C. 30120, recall repairs are the manufacturer's cost, with an age cap: the no-charge rule does not reach a vehicle "bought by the first purchaser more than 15 calendar years" before the recall notice. The cap hasn't come into play for the campaigns listed here, though a 2012 RAV4 is close to it.

The coolant bypass valve: pay for it, or sell with it?

NHTSA's recall lists for 2019 and 2020 RAV4s carry no campaign for the coolant bypass valve, so the repair is yours to pay for. Owners describe an Engine Maintenance Required message, a coolant leak or an overheating warning, and a few past 100,000 miles say the dealer declined to help.

Before you spend anything, get the fault and a price in writing, and ask a Toyota dealer whether any coverage still applies to your VIN. Then weigh that against what the RAV4 brings unrepaired. Our engine problems guide lists the symptoms; the repair-or-sell worksheet works the figures.

The 2019 tank that won't fill is the same call: no recall lists it, so tell a buyer the range you get. A 12-volt battery that dies after a few days parked is smaller; see small problems.

What raises or lowers a RAV4 offer

No page can price a RAV4 it hasn't seen, so there's no figure here. An offer turns on these:

  • Which RAV4 it is. Gas, Hybrid or Prime, and the trim. The recalls differ by version.
  • Paper for the known faults. On a 2019 or 2020, a receipt showing the coolant bypass valve already replaced settles a buyer's first question. Recall repair orders do the same.
  • Paint, glass and hail. Peeling white paint, a shattered sunroof or hail dents all show up in the number. See hail and flood damage.
  • The title. Money still owed, a salvage brand or no title at all limits who can take the RAV4; see car with a loan and salvage title.

Selling a RAV4 in Tulsa: two buyers, one set of papers

Call (539) 271-2021 or use the form, with the year, the version, the miles, what's wrong and what the title shows. If it's one we buy, we buy it ourselves and pay by check, wherever in Tulsa it's parked. No title or no keys? We look at those too, though looking isn't a promise to buy.

Peddle, our partner, is the second buyer. Its page describes a free, no-obligation offer made online, says Peddle arranges the pickup and covers its cost, and states that at pickup "Peddle issues payment immediately by check." It lists the title, the registration and a driver's license or ID as the papers to have ready. A RAV4 sold to Peddle through this site earns us a referral fee. Cash for cars weighs one route against the other.

Whoever buys it, Service Oklahoma's transfer list starts with a correctly assigned, notarized title (Form 718 for an electronic one) and a release for any open lien. While a loan is active, the lender holds the title, so sort that out before the sale. The paperwork guide has each step. This site doesn't work for Toyota, and no Toyota dealer is behind it.

Quick answers for RAV4 sellers

Can I sell my Toyota RAV4 with a leaking coolant bypass valve?

Yes, as it is. Tell the buyer what the shop found and hand over its paperwork, then compare the repair quote with an offer for the RAV4 unrepaired. Because no recall covers the valve, the bill is yours if you fix it.

Why does the 2019 RAV4 have so many complaints?

Its 900 reports are the most for any RAV4 year from 2012 to 2025, and two problems make up a large share: a fuel tank that won't take a full fill and the engine coolant bypass valve. A 2019 with both checked and its 2019 and 2020 recalls closed answers a buyer's first questions before they're asked.

My RAV4's battery has been replaced. Does the battery tray recall apply?

On a 2013 to 2018, it may. That campaign is about replacement batteries that don't sit right in the tray. Run the VIN, and if the recall is open, book it with a Toyota dealer and keep the repair order for the buyer.

Can I sell a RAV4 Prime before the converter recall is done?

Yes. Tell the buyer whether the DC-DC converter has been replaced, and bring the dealer's repair order if it has. Until it is, the recall notice tells owners not to charge when it's below 41 degrees Fahrenheit or expected to drop below that.

Is a RAV4 with no title or no key worth a call?

Yes. We look at RAV4s missing either one, though we can't promise to buy each one, so call (539) 271-2021 and say what's missing. If the title was lost, Oklahoma issues a replacement, and our lost title page explains the steps.

Where to start with your RAV4

Pull up the VIN, note the mileage and run the recall check, then call (539) 271-2021 or send the form. On that call we'll tell you whether it's a RAV4 we buy and pay for by check. When it isn't, request the partner's offer instead; asking costs nothing, and you can turn it down.
