Short answer

Clear any open recall first; the 2016 differential and 2018 brake campaigns are the big ones. The 2016 is the busiest complaint year, and 2012 owners report limp mode.

The counts below come from complaints Tacoma owners filed with NHTSA, the federal safety agency, for model years 2012 to 2025, pulled in September 2026. Treat each as one driver's story rather than proof of a defect.

  • 2012, limp mode. 295 complaints: 122 name the engine and 52 the fuel and propulsion system. The check engine and TRAC OFF lights come on together, a scan shows secondary air injection codes, and the truck drops into limp mode and won't pick up speed. Several owners mention a Toyota service campaign for that system. It is not a safety recall, so a recall search won't list it; ask a Toyota service department whether your VIN qualifies.
  • 2016 and 2017, shifting and the rear end. 2016 is the busiest year: 323 complaints, 136 naming the power train. 2017 has 239, 68 on the power train. The reports split two ways: an automatic that hesitates, hunts between gears or pauses going from reverse to drive, and a rear differential that leaks oil or howls at highway speed. The leak has a recall. The shifting has none.
  • 2018 and 2019, brakes and fuel pumps. 206 and 218 complaints. Brakes lead both years (47, then 56), then the fuel and propulsion system (41, then 55). Owners keep describing brake fluid dripping from above the pedal onto the driver's floor mat, and a pedal that sinks. The fuel reports describe a truck that stalls or loses power at speed.
  • 2024, hard shifts. 149 complaints. 54 name the power train, mostly jerky or hard shifts, and 34 the brakes, many about the rear brake hose recall.
  • 2025, door handles. 98 complaints, 39 under body structure. Almost all of those describe an inside door handle that broke, so the door opened only from outside. Nothing on NHTSA's 2025 recall list is for the handle.

Which Tacoma recalls to clear first

Recalls work differently. Toyota has declared a safety defect and set a fix, and a campaign can cover only some trucks from a year. The ones worth knowing:

  • 2013 and 2014: valve springs that may break, on trucks built from July 1 to October 11, 2013.
  • 2016 and 2017: the rear differential. Its summary: "Oil may leak from the area where the rear differential carrier is assembled to rear axle housing." Six-cylinder trucks from those years also have a crank position sensor recall for engine stalling.
  • 2018 and 2019: "Improper machining of the brake master cylinder may result in internal damage of one of the seals, affecting brake performance." Some 2019 owners report the same leak on a truck the recall left out.
  • 2017 to 2020: the low-pressure fuel pump, under campaigns 20V012 and 20V682. If that pump quits, the engine can die while you're driving.
  • 2022 and 2023: rear axle shafts that may separate from the axle housing (24V152).
  • 2024 and 2025: on 4-wheel-drive trucks, rear brake hoses that packed mud and dirt can damage until they leak. Campaign 26V514 adds shock absorbers whose oil reservoir can come off; owner letters were due in September 2026. 2025 trucks add a front driveshaft recall: a CV joint that may break.

Federal law, 49 U.S.C. 30120, is what makes a recall repair free, and it has an age limit: the free remedy doesn't apply once more than 15 calendar years separate the first buyer's purchase from the recall notice. A 2012 Tacoma is at or near that line, so a recall issued on one from now on may leave you paying. To see which of these still apply to your truck, enter its VIN at NHTSA's recall search.

Repair the Tacoma or sell it as it sits?

Book the open recalls at a Toyota dealer before a buyer sees the truck. The work costs you nothing, and buyers are told to look: the FTC's used-car guide points them to NHTSA's VIN search for open recalls. If the repair is waiting on parts, as some 2024 and 2025 owners report, sell anyway and give the buyer the campaign number.

A fault with no recall behind it is yours to pay for: the 2012 air injection problem when no campaign applies, a 2016 or 2017 automatic that hunts for gears, a 2019 brake leak the recall skipped. Ask a shop for a written diagnosis and estimate, then get an offer on the truck unrepaired. Line up the estimate and the as-is offer on the repair-or-sell worksheet; the warning signs are on engine problems and bad transmission.

A truck stuck in limp mode, or with a brake pedal that sinks, shouldn't be driven across Tulsa to a buyer. Neither route below asks you to.

Tacoma details that change the number

No number here; an offer is the only honest figure. What moves it:

  • How it's built. Cab, bed length, 2- or 4-wheel drive, engine, and manual or automatic. Some recalls above hinge on 4x4 or six-cylinder, so know which yours is.
  • Miles. The exact odometer reading.
  • Its year's known problem. Whether the recalls are closed, and whether the truck shows its year's symptom, like limp mode on a 2012 or a wet floor mat on a 2019.
  • Underneath and in the bed. Frame rust, oil around the rear differential, dents in the bed.
  • The title. An Oklahoma title in your name with nothing owed is the easiest to sell. A salvage brand or hail damage changes who will buy it.

Sell your truck in Tulsa: we buy it or we refer it

We buy it. Our Tulsa number is (539) 271-2021; the sell-it-to-us form works too. Tell us the year, cab, drive type, miles and where in Tulsa it's parked. When a Tacoma is one we buy, any part of Tulsa is fine, and we pay by check. If the title or keys are missing, we'll still look; some of those we can buy and some we can't, and you'll hear which on the call.

We refer it. For a truck we pass on, the route is Peddle, our partner: its offer is made online, costs nothing, and you can turn it down. Peddle's own page puts pickup this way: "Peddle arranges and covers the cost of vehicle pickup at a time that's convenient for you." Peddle pays by check at pickup. Papers for that route: title, registration, and a driver's license or other ID. This site gets a referral fee when you sell to Peddle.

Paid off a truck loan? Service Oklahoma shows the lender's lien as active until a properly signed lien release is surrendered, so get that paper before you sell. Car with a loan covers one still being paid. The paperwork guide has Oklahoma's other steps; cash for cars weighs both routes. This site has nothing to do with Toyota or its dealerships.

What Tacoma sellers want to know

How can I sell my Toyota Tacoma if it's stuck in limp mode?

Sell it where it's parked. A truck that won't get past a crawl doesn't need to be driven anywhere: when we buy one, we come to it, and the partner's pickup is arranged and paid for by the partner. On a 2012, tell us the codes if a scan found them, and whether a Toyota dealer has looked at the air injection system. The any-condition page covers describing a truck that barely drives.

Is 2016 the Tacoma year with the most complaints?

Among 2012 to 2025 trucks, yes: 323 complaints, more than 2012's 295 or 2017's 239. A year with more trucks on the road collects more reports, so a count is not a failure rate. What matters for yours is what those reports describe and whether its recalls are done.

My 2019 Tacoma leaks brake fluid, but no recall shows up for it. What now?

The master cylinder recall covers certain 2018 and 2019 trucks, not all of them, and some owners report the same leak on trucks it left out. On yours it's a paid repair. A pedal that sinks is a reason to park the truck. Get a written estimate, compare it with an offer on the truck as it is, and tell any buyer about the leak.

The inside door handle broke on my 2025 Tacoma. Does that rule out selling it?

Not by itself. It's the most common complaint on the 2025 truck, and no recall covers it. Say so up front, and say whether a dealer has already looked at it. A newer truck with one broken handle is still a newer truck, and an offer will account for the handle.

Will you look at my Tacoma if the title or the keys are missing?

Yes. On the call, tell us which one you don't have. It may still be a truck we buy, and if it isn't, we'll say so. If the title is lost, the lost title page shows how Oklahoma replaces it.

When you're ready to let the Tacoma go

Before you call the Tulsa line at (539) 271-2021 or fill in the form, write down the VIN and the exact mileage. We'll say plainly whether the Tacoma is a truck we buy, and when it is, we pay by check. If it's not, the partner button below starts an offer that costs nothing to ask for and that you can decline.
